The Alabama Crimson Tide may not be able to do better than Kalen DeBoer, who has lost eight games through his first two seasons with the program in 2024 and 2025. That’s the sentiment USA Today’s Blake Toppmeyer shared during the latest edition of “SEC Football Unfiltered.”
Toppmeyer and his co-host John Adams deny that DeBoer is on the hot seat, while Toppmeyer explicitly stated that DeBoer’s recent multi-year extension means Alabama won’t be looking to get rid of him anytime soon.
“(The extension) puts the kibosh on any hot-seat talk. This reaffirms DeBoer is Alabama’s guy, and the administration believes in him. On one hand, Alabama’s Rose Bowl loss served as an embarrassing end to DeBoer’s second season. On the other hand, could Alabama do better than DeBoer if he left or it decided to replace him? I doubt it,” Toppmeyer said.
DeBoer was rumored to be interested in the Michigan Wolverines’ head coaching job, one eventually filled by Kyle Whittingham following Sherone Moore’s scandalous exit. The rumors never went anywhere, except to arguably add to DeBoer’s buyout figure.
It’s good that the Crimson Tide has a coach that a historical juggernaut like Michigan covets. Then again, it might just be a sign of the times for both fallen powerhouses that are each less than a decade removed from their last national championships.
Alabama needs Nick Saban back to ever become the powerhouse it once was
The glory years are over in Tuscaloosa. DeBoer being labeled the best the program can do was the final nail in the coffin. The only way a comeback feels possible for Alabama would be to bring Nick Saban back.
Unfortunately for the Tide, that looks less likely by the day. Saban has preached time and time again that he is enjoying retirement and that his wife, Miss Terry, doesn’t approve of him getting back into coaching.
Saban isn’t walking through that door. At this point, would Lane Kiffin even consider it? The LSU Tigers appear much more serious about spending than Alabama and have more resources to put together a winning team. Many SEC schools are in the same boat relative to the Tide.
Alabama’s era of dominance is over. That DeBoer isn’t even seen as an option the program is settling for, but is actually seen as the best option available, is your proof.
