The Badgers will face the 2nd longest tenured coach in college football in 2026

The Big Ten saw a coaching shakeup happen over the weekend, as the Michigan Wolverines filled their coaching vacancy by hiring former Utah Utes head coach Kyle Whittingham, the second-longest tenured head coach in college football.

Whittingham, 65, had been with the Utes since 2002, but stepped down in a unique situation as Utah decided to go forward with “coach-in-waiting” Morgan Scalley. Upon the move, Whittingham had clearly shared he wasn’t planning to retire and now lands in one of the premier jobs in college football.

The addition of Whittingham is a stark difference from the Jim Harbaugh and Sherrone Moore era, which ended in ugly fashion earlier this month when the latter was fired for cause due to an inappropriate relationship.

Michigan had a strong season this year, going 9-3 in the first year with five-star Bryce Underwood as its quarterback.

We’ll see if there’s a lot of turnover with the Wolverines this offseason, but Whittingham is, on paper, a strong hire for the short term as a proven winner. He has generally festered disciplined teams with physicality that should mesh well in the Big Ten.

Wisconsin’s schedule in 2026 is far different than their 2025 schedule, but Michigan figures to still be one of their toughest opponents next year. Now, they have a new head coach.
