Notre Dame is set to host Texas commit Greedy James for an official visit this weekend. Where do things stand heading into the trip?

Notre Dame football enters a very important stretch for its 2027 recruiting class. Head Coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are set to host a long list of top targets for official visits this weekend. That includes Manvel (Texas) High School star Karnell “Greedy” James.

While James is currently committed to the Texas Longhorns, he has been a prime flip candidate for several months. That has allowed both Notre Dame and LSU to get into the conversation, and they have become the two main programs to know. The next several weeks will be very important to see if either program can force the talented defensive back to flip.

This weekend’s return trip to South Bend is going to be an interesting data point to consider. Here is the latest on James.

Where things stand between James and Notre Dame

When James unofficially visited Notre Dame about a month and a half ago, there was clearly some intrigue in the program. Since then, things have intensified a good bit. There is a belief that the return to South Bend could even push that interest further and could make a flip very possible in the future. There is a lot of optimism on Notre Dame’s side right now.

The other program to watch is LSU, and they are a program that is making me nervous about this one right now. He is fresh off an official visit to Baton Rouge, and James is actually a former native of Louisiana. It wouldn’t shock me if head coach Lane Kiffin and the Tigers won out in the end. I do believe, however, that a flip will ultimately happen.

While most list James as a safety, Notre Dame actually likes him as a cornerback. His combination of athleticism and physicality could also allow him to play inside at nickel. This is a versatile defensive back that the Irish staff is going to push hard for this weekend to potentially pair with commits Xavier Hasan, Ace Alston, John Gay III, and Zayden Gamble.

Karnell “Greedy” James’s recruiting background

From a recruiting rankings perspective, James isn’t going to blow anyone away. He is currently considered to be a three-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms, the exception being 247 Sports, which has him rated as the No. 87 overall player and the No. 5 safety in the class.

On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, James is currently pegged as the No. 285 overall player, the No. 24 safety, and the No. 44 player from the state of Texas for the 2027 recruiting class. When you consider his offer list and overall talent, the difference in James’s recruiting rankings will leave some pretty puzzled, even if his rankings have been trending upward.

James has seen his offer list continue to expand, even after being committed to the Longhorns on December 3 of last year. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, LSU, Florida, Texas A&M, Florida State, Texas Tech, Utah, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, TCU, Arizona State, Iowa, Oklahoma State, Houston, Baylor, Cal, SMU, Wisconsin, Oregon State, and Washington State, among others.

As a junior, James put together a tremendous season for Manvel. In 12 games, the 6-0, 175-pound cover man managed to collect 53 total tackles, two interceptions, and six pass breakups. James also recovered a fumble while returning two punts for touchdowns. This is a fast, fluid athlete with a ton of upside.
