2027 defensive lineman Segun Alexander is heading to Notre Dame this weekend for an official visit. Where do things currently stand?

Notre Dame football is getting ready for another pivotal official visitor weekend. Head coach Marcus Freeman and the Fighting Irish are steadily putting together an elite 2027 recruiting class, and there should be more good news after this weekend. At least, that is the expectation.

One of the more interesting visitors heading to South Bend is Rabun Gap (Ga.) Nacoochee defensive lineman Segun Alexander. Originally a member of the 2028 recruiting class, Alexander opted to reclassify to 2027 a couple of months ago. As soon as he did, the Georgia native became a potentially important target for defensive line coach Charlie Partridge and the Irish staff.

Notre Dame currently holds defensive line commitments from 5-star defensive end Abraham Sesay, elite defensive tackle David Folorunsho, toolsy pass rusher Jackson Vaughn, and top-100 defensive end Aidan O’Neil. There is a spot or two remaining, and the Irish continue to push for talented defenders like Brayden Parks and Tyler Alexander. The official visit this weekend for Alexander is going to be worth keeping a close eye on.

Here is the latest on Alexander heading into that trip.

The latest with Segun Alexander and Notre Dame

The Alexander recruitment has been an interesting one to watch, especially after things got escalated following his reclassification. There has been some clear interest in Notre Dame early, so there shouldn’t be much of a surprise that he set up his official visit. They are, however, more of a wildcard for Alexander right now, but they continue to push for him.

As of today, Texas A&M is considered to be the firm leader for Alexander. Notre Dame has a chance to flip the script this weekend, but I wouldn’t bet against the Aggies right now. Freeman and Co. have shown that they have a tremendous track record of closing, however, so the staff will have a chance to make a statement this weekend. Don’t be surprised if Texas A&M puts pressure on him not to make the trip.

Blessed with an intriguing blend of size and movement skills, Alexander projects as a big end who can move inside as his body develops. He would be an intriguing addition for the Irish, potentially. Making sure he gets to campus is priority No. 1. From there, this staff needs to work their magic.

Segun Alexander’s recruiting background

Alexander was considered to be a four-star player by each of the major recruiting platforms for the 2028 recruiting class, but that has changed since reclassifying. On the 247 Sports Composite ranking, Alexander currently sits as a three-star, the No. 515 overall player, the No. 63 defensive lineman, and the No. 63 player from the state of Georgia for the 2027 recruiting class. Those rankings will rise exponentially after a big senior season from Alexander.

If those rankings don’t impress you, and they probably don’t for now, Alexander’s offer list certainly will. Some of his top offers include the Fighting Irish, Georgia, Florida, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Miami, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Arkansas, Cal, Michigan State, West Virginia, UNC, Kansas, and Syracuse, among several others.

The 6-4, 275-pound defensive lineman put together a tremendous season in 2025. In 12 games, Alexander managed to collect 36 total tackles, 18 tackles for loss, and 13 sacks. Alexander also had 19 more quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, and another fumble recovery. His upside as a playmaking interior presence is extremely high on the college level.
