The search for the next head coach of the Michigan Wolverines has been a roller coaster, to say the least. Heading into last weekend, the search felt clear cut between two candidates in Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer and Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham. However, that fell apart over the weekend, as DeBoer won his first playoff game to extend his timeline at Alabama, while Dillingham signed a contract extension to remain at Arizona State.
It felt like Michigan’s search was nearing a disaster, as they had to completely re-evaluate their process and try to re-orient themselves after their top two candidates dissolved within a 12-hour span over the weekend.
Now, however, as we approach the Christmas holidays, Michigan’s search has seemingly narrowed its focus to one final coach that they are preparing to send the house for.
Michigan’s next head coach could be in place by Christmas
Optimism had waned that the Wolverines would be able to find a new head coach before the new year began. However, one last hail mary attempt to do so in time for Christmas is underway, and it revolves around a former Big Ten coach.
Michigan is circling around to Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm as their potential next head coach. As I reported on Saturday, Brohm was one of the top remaining candidates left on Michigan’s radar. However, Brohm withdrew his name from the Penn State coaching search, and much like Kenny Dillingham, there’s no guarantee that he will leave his alma mater to accept the Michigan job.
As of the time of this writing, Brohm is currently leading Louisville in their bowl game against Toledo. Sources say Michigan will try to talk with him and his representatives after the game to try and gauge his interest in taking the job. Much of this will depend on Brohm’s vision for the program and staff he brings along with him. Michigan might not have a choice, however, as they have eliminated prominent names like Jedd Fisch already.
There’s still plenty of hoops left to go through still, and nothing is ever certain in the coaching carousel, but maybe, just maybe, Michigan’s search is starting to wind down.
