The Morning Five: Five Key Stats For Georgia vs. Oklahoma

Welcome to the Morning Five, five numbers you need to know to be ready for this weekend’s matchup between the Georgia Bulldogs and and Oklahoma Sooners. Let’s jump right in:
- 3,187. That’s how many days have passed since Georgia and Oklahoma played what remains, for my money, the best college football game in history. At least the best one that I have ever seen. The fortunes of the two programs have diverged somewhat since that evening in Pasadena, with Georgia playing for three national titles and winning two, while Oklahoma has remained competitive, even playoff worthy in 2025, but not a serious threat to win a national title in anyone’s estimation. That being said, I still think this is a pretty dangerous team.A Brent Venables defense is generally capable of keeping his team in the game even when the offense isn’t pulling its weight. - 16. That’s Oklahoma’s current SEC rank in total offense. Unfortunately for the Sooners, there are only 16 teams in the league. The Sooners have only topped the 300 yard mark in total offense once, in their opener against UTEP. It’s still early in the year, but three games in is far enough to establish an identity. The Sooners’’ identity on offense this year may be that they don’t have one.
- 84.4. That’s the percentage of his passes that Gunner Stockton has completed so far this season. It’s the highest percentage among SEC quarterbacks by a pretty significant margin. But the Oklahoma defense, with a wealth of disguised coverages and bait-and-switch blitz packages will be a whole different animal from the units he’s faced so far.
- 0. That is the number of interceptions Stockton has thrown this season, against 9 touchdowns. It may be the most important of the numbers this week. If there’s a path for Oklahoma to pull the upset in this one it almost certainly involves stealing some possessions and being gifted a short field or two via turnovers. If Georgia takes care of the ball and forces John Mateer to drive the Sooners offense 70+ yards on every possession, it should be a good day for the home team.
- –4. The flipside to that number above is Oklahoma’s current -4 turnover margin, dead last in the SEC. The Land Thieves have 6 turnovers so far on the season, 3 interceptions and 3 lost fumbles fumbles. If the Bulldogs can get the Sooners to their 2.0 turnover per game average it should be a good day for the home team. Until later…
