While the program has since moved into a new era under head coach Kyle Whittingham, the circumstances involving Shiver remain one of the most discussed chapters in the university's recent athletic history.
The Rise and Role of Paige Shiver
Paige Shiver joined the University of Michigan athletic department in November 2021, initially serving as the On-Campus Recruiting and Football Operations Coordinator. Her background was rooted in both sports and advocacy; the daughter of long-time Chicago Bears scout Jeff Shiver, she had previously worked in development and marketing for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Her trajectory within the program was swift. In February 2024, shortly after Sherrone Moore was named head coach following Jim Harbaugh’s departure, Shiver was promoted to Executive Assistant to the Head Coach. In this high-level administrative role, she was responsible for staff communication, high-stakes scheduling, and coordination during critical recruiting cycles. Public salary records highlighted her rapid ascent, showing a compensation increase from approximately $58,000 in 2022 to $90,000 by 2023, a 55% jump that later became a point of public contention.
The 2025 Controversy and Moore’s Dismissal
The stability of the Moore era fractured in mid-November 2025, when the university received an anonymous tip alleging an "inappropriate relationship" between Moore and a staff member. While the university did not officially name the individual at the time, widespread media reports and social media activity quickly identified Shiver as the staffer involved.
The situation escalated rapidly in December 2025. Following a confidential internal investigation, the University of Michigan fired Sherrone Moore for cause on December 10, 2025. The fallout turned from professional to legal when Moore was detained by police the same night. Reports indicated that Moore had allegedly broken into a residence belonging to Shiver while wielding a knife, leading to his arrest for assault and his lodgment in Washtenaw County Jail.
Employment Status and University Policy
In the wake of Moore’s termination, public attention turned toward Shiver’s continued presence on the staff. While Moore was dismissed immediately, university officials confirmed in mid-December 2025 that Shiver remained employed. This decision was rooted in University Policy No. 201.97, which governs supervisor-employee relationships.
The policy places the burden of disclosure entirely on the supervisor. Key aspects of the policy include:

The Transition to the Whittingham Era
As 2025 drew to a close, Michigan sought to distance itself from the scandal by hiring veteran Utah coach Kyle Whittingham on December 28. Whittingham arrived with a mandate to restore "integrity and stability" to the program, bringing with him a brand-new coaching staff that prioritized long-term loyalty and proven developmental tracks.
The arrival of the new regime effectively signaled the end of the previous administration's support structure. By early 2026, the Michigan football masthead had been completely overhauled. While Shiver’s initial retention was a matter of institutional policy, the wholesale change in leadership and the "brand new" coaching staff finalized the transition.
