The Trench Warfare: Four Keys For Michigan To Conquer No. 1 Ohio State

Tomorrow at noon, all eyes turn to Michigan Stadium for the 121st edition of "The Game." The No. 15 Michigan Wolverines, currently sitting at 9-2, face their toughest challenge yet as they host the undefeated and No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes enter as a 10-point favorite, fueled by vengeance after three straight losses in the rivalry, but Coach Sherrone Moore's Wolverines are determined to prove that the recent shift in power is permanent.
To upset the top-ranked team in the nation and extend the streak, Michigan must rely on its defensive tenacity and embrace a calculated, grind-it-out offensive strategy. The following four keys will dictate the outcome of the game:
1. Win the Rushing Battle on Both Sides
The historical adage holds true in this rivalry: the team with more rushing yards has won 23 consecutive matchups. For Michigan, this is not just a goal, but a blueprint for victory.
• Offensive Execution: True freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood is making his debut in The Game, and the best way to ease his burden is to establish a dominant ground game. Running back Jordan Marshall and the offensive line must be relentless. While the line is young, they must elevate their play and consistently generate 4+ yards per carry. This controls the clock, keeps the explosive Ohio State offense on the sideline, and sets up manageable third downs.
• Defensive Containment: Michigan's defense, currently ranked among the nation's best against the run, must hold strong. Ohio State's running game has been identified as their only potential weakness this season, with some struggles to find consistent success on the ground. Defensive linemen like Derrick Moore and the interior tackles must exploit this vulnerability by preventing the Buckeyes from establishing a run/pass balance, forcing new QB Julian Sayin into predictable passing situations.
2. Protect Bryce Underwood and Limit Turnovers
The most significant variable for Michigan is the true freshman quarterback, Bryce Underwood. How he handles the monumental pressure of The Game will likely determine the result.
• Ball Security is Paramount: Underwood has thrown more interceptions than is ideal for a championship contender. Against a talented Ohio State defense, one or two short-field turnovers could be catastrophic. The offensive game plan must be simplified to ensure mental clarity, focusing on short, high-percentage throws and a healthy dose of play-action off the run game. Michigan cannot afford to give Ohio State's offense free points.
• Offensive Line Must Be at Its Best: The unit has to give Underwood a clean pocket. Allowing the Buckeyes to pressure him early could cause him to bail prematurely and exacerbate turnover issues. If the offensive line can protect for long enough, Michigan's receivers and tight ends have favorable matchups that Underwood can exploit down the middle of the field.
3. Unleash Wink Martindale's Defensive Pressure
Michigan's defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, must craft a game plan that confuses and frustrates Ohio State's inexperienced quarterback, Julian Sayin.
• Chaos Creation: Sayin, despite his talent, is still a young quarterback facing his first rivalry test. Michigan’s defense must use disguised coverages, pre-snap movement, and creative blitz packages to speed up his internal clock. The goal is to prevent him from standing comfortably in the pocket and throwing to the nation's elite receiving corps, led by Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate.
• Keep the Score Low: Former Wolverine great Jake Butt stated it plainly: "If Ohio State scores 30 points, Michigan can't win this." Michigan's defense has not allowed 30 points all season, and they must maintain that ceiling. Forcing field goals instead of touchdowns, especially after long drives, will be essential in keeping the game within striking distance for the Wolverine offense.
4. Special Teams Must Provide a Spark
In close rivalry games, the often-overlooked phase of special teams can swing momentum instantly.
• The Big Play: Michigan needs a game-changing play, perhaps a "Desmond Howard-type play," from return specialist Andrew Marsh. A deep kick return or punt return that generates a short field or, ideally, a score, would be invaluable against an opponent as talented as the Buckeyes.
• Punting and Kicking: Punter Hudson Hollenbeck must have a great day, pinning the Buckeyes deep and ensuring they don't get short fields. Kicker Dominic Zvada must be perfect, as this game is likely to be decided by one or two possessions.
If Michigan controls the trenches, avoids the critical turnovers that plague inexperienced quarterbacks, and relies on the Ann Arbor crowd to provide an electric, hostile environment, they can successfully defend The Big House and secure an historic fourth straight victory over the Buckeyes.
