TCU and North Carolina opened the 2026 season an ocean away from home. One penalty from that game is already generating buzz.
The Horned Frogs and Tar Heels met this Saturday at Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The game was part of the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
Running back Jeremy Payne, TCU's leading rusher, found himself at the center of a questionable officiating decision.
Officials flagged him for unsportsmanlike conduct for what looked like a run-of-the-mill celebration.
The Flag Drew Instant Backlash Online
Video of the play shows Payne raising his arm in what looks like a routine celebration gesture after a strong gain.
Officials threw a flag anyway. They assessed a 15-yard penalty.
X account @stoolgambling shared the clip, simply noting that Payne "was just issued a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct after this play."

College football rolled out new officiating guidance for 2026. The changes aim to make unsportsmanlike conduct calls more consistent, and in some cases, more automatic.
National coordinator of officials Steve Shaw explained the shift earlier this month. He emphasized that officials would reserve 15-yard penalties specifically for unsportsmanlike conduct and personal fouls this season.
Taunting, in particular, now draws a flag any time it disrupts or delays the game, even though players can still celebrate freely among themselves.
Payne Enters The Season As One Of TCU's Key Pieces
Payne built plenty of momentum heading into Saturday's opener. He capped last season with a walk-off touchdown reception in overtime to beat USC in the Alamo Bowl.
That performance came at the end of a sophomore campaign where he averaged 5.7 yards per carry. TCU's coaching staff has leaned heavily on his production after losing starting quarterback Josh Hoover to the transfer portal. They paired Payne instead with Harvard transfer Jaden Craig under center for the new season.
Saturday's matchup carried plenty of storylines beyond the penalty itself. North Carolina enters Year 2 under Bill Belichick facing a brutal schedule, one ESPN analysts have flagged as among the toughest in the country.
The Tar Heels also revealed defensive coordinator Steve Belichick would miss the opener due to a medical leave of absence, an announcement that came weeks before kickoff.
As for the play, it's already emerged as one of the more talked-about officiating moments from Week 0 of the college football season.
