Three key takeaways from SEC Media Days for Ole Miss

While today is the final day for SEC Media Days down in Tampa, the only team that matters wrapped up their visit yesterday and they put on quite the show.

Here are the three biggest takeaways from the Rebels’ day down in Tampa.

1. Pete Golding… that dude rocks

Apparently Coach PG, as the boys call him, was the only coach to receive applause upon his exit from his media session. Why? Because he was authentic. Pete was just being Pete up there. My favorite answer was when he was asked about the difference between being a coordinator and a head coach when it came to meetings and such.

To paraphrase: He hired three dudes to handle the head coach bullsh*t so he could just recruit and coach ball. He also said the same athletic directors whining about tampering are calling other coaches during the season trying to hire them away, tampering is everywhere.

He was so real, so authentic that when he left the stage, the SEC Nation crew was damn near speechless. Cole Cubelic said it best, the more we get to hear this man and get to know him, the more we are going to love him. I think Pete Golding just became the darling of the SEC.

2. LSU is just another game on the schedule

I think everyone in Oxford is fed up with the Lane Kiffin/LSU questions. Hell, there was a reporter from Mississippi State that asked Kewan Lacy more questions about LSU than she did anything else. The responses from all of them were actually hilarious. Will Echoles had to even hold back laughter. A reporter from Baton Rouge asked about his relationship with Kiffin and what is LSU getting in a lengthy question, obviously hoping for some insightful answer. Kewan said, “Great coach.”

They are ready to move on. Golding has them locked in on the season opener and none of them care about the circus Kiffin created. They will worry about LSU when they begin week 3 preparations. Golding was asked if these questions would persist even after the game was over and he bluntly said it was up to the media. They don’t give a damn anymore.

3. Consistency is key

That begins with Pete Golding. The guys all said he was the same guy all the time and they knew what they were getting from their head coach. An obvious slight at the previous head coach. But it also referred to a few other things as well. The hire of John David Baker was an intentional hire to maintain some level of consistency with the offensive system after Kiffin gutted that staff on his way out.

While there is Heisman campaign going on for Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy, both just want to be consistent performers on the field so that they can achieve the team goal of a national title. The odds makers are not giving Ole Miss much a chance, but I would imagine this group could make them all look pretty dumb pretty quick.
