The LSU Tigers and Lane Kiffin have mostly filled out their offensive staff and made it past the early signing period. Now, before the transfer portal opens on January 2, they will have to shift their focus to retaining talent that they see as important for next season.
A number players, such as Jelani Watkins and Ahmad Breaux, have already hit the portal. They haven't lost anyone too crucial yet, but they will certainly have opposing coaches itching to add some Tigers to their teams.
The offensive side of the ball is in danger of the most turnover, given all the new staff there. Here are the standouts that Kiffin should make sure don't go anywhere:
RB Harlem Berry
Berry is among the biggest priorities on the roster. It could be difficult if Kiffin does indeed move on from Frank Wilson as running backs coach, but not impossible.
The true freshman's 101 carries for 446 yards and two touchdowns didn't jump off the page, but he showed flashes of the brilliance that made him the top running back in his recruiting class. He looked much better over the second half of the season and started to show some pass catching ability as well.
Kiffin's system has produced a ton of great running back seasons, with Berry having more than enough natural talent to be the next one up.
TE Trey'Dez Green
Green is another very important piece of this offense that should be brought back. His usage was inconsistent throughout the year, and he had some drop issues, but showed immense potential. Kiffin brought over his tight ends coach, Joe Cox, and the two have had success with receivers at that position in recent years.
Despite his 6-foot-7 frame, Green can be used all over the offense. He lined up in the slot more than he did as an in-line tight end this season. He has some potential on the outside as well. That type of versatility would be fun for someone as creative as Kiffin.
OL Carius Curne
Many LSU fans would be happy with a complete offensive overhaul, and for some good reasons, but Curne is worth bringing back even if it's just as a project. He should not have been in the situation where he needed to play as much as a true freshman as he did.
The Arkansas native was a top 70 recruit and at least had flashes when he had to step into the offensive line in the second half of the season. He had his mistakes as well, but he still has some untapped potential. The right offensive line coach could turn him into a star, perhaps that will be new Tigers coach Eric Wolford.
