Three Observations from Syracuse Football Practice on Aug. 18

Tuesday marked day two of Week 3 of training camp practice for the Syracuse Orange football team. Next week marks the final week of training camp practice before the team transitions into game week preparation, starting on Aug. 31.

The Orange are preparing for the season opener on Sept. 5 against New Hampshire.

As we have summer, SyracuseRoundtable had live coverage from Tuesday's practice session, so here's what you need to know:

Justus Ross-Simmons returns, with a new number

Wide receiver Justus Ross-Simmons returned to the practice field on Tuesday. Ross-Simmons was deemed eligible after a Colorado based court ruling in July gave a fifth year of eligibility to Class of 2022 recruits who graduated in 2026.

Ross-Simmons played the past two seasons for the Orange, combining for more than 500 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.

During the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Ross-Simmons wore No. 12. This year, No. 12 is being worn on defense by defensive back Chris Peal and on offense by quarterback Amari Odom.

Donning No. 86 and red penny, Ross-Simmons is now officially listed on the team's roster as of Tuesday afternoon.

A separation between inside and outside practice for certain players

On Tuesday, we saw more black shirts and other deemed "impact" players make their way into the indoor facility. Included in the mix was the quarterback unit, led by Steve Angeli.

With a combination of closed practices and off days over the next five days (excluding Thursday), it is likely a sign the Orange are trying to build more chemistry with players who are likely to see more significant playing time this season.

Nearly half the team continued to compete outside while some worked on individual position drills inside.

What's next for Jamie Tremble?

Former four-star high school recruit Jamie Tremble is one of the highly-touted prospects signed by Fran Brown during his current three-year tenure as head coach.

The 6-foot-4 junior has had a unique journey in Central New York.

In his freshman season, Tremble played in all 12 games, with a mix of tight end and special teams.

In 2025, Tremble played again in all 12 games, along with four starts, but played both offense as a tight end, and on defense, registering 18 tackles.

In April, Tremble played on the defensive line and registered a tackle for loss during the team's spring game.

On Tuesday, Tremble was running drills with the linebacker group.

Tremble is listed as a linebacker on the team's roster as of Tuesday.

How and where the team uses Tremble will be an interesting storyline heading into the fall.

Three standout players: News and notes

-Edge rusher Tunmise Adeleye continues to be a stand out during open practice. The fifth- year transfer is loud and vocal during competition and 1-on-1 drills. The coaches continue to offer praise regarding Adeleye's production and intensity. Adeleye battled against multiple tight ends during blocking and positioning drills and continued to win reps.

-Sophomore defensive back James Trotter was a player we spotlighted months ago during spring practice. The product from New Orleans, La. continues to bring hard-hitting defensive stops during competition periods. Trotter redshirted last season but could be an interesting player with a potential impact on the team's kickoff and punt coverage units this season.

-Peal continues to be one of the best players for the Orange during the summer session. The projected future NFL draft selection has done a nice job defending wide receivers and making his presence known during physical contact drills.
