Three thoughts on Notre Dame and the College Football Playoff snub

Notre Dame football found out its fate with the College Football Playoff on Sunday, and it wasn’t the news that the Irish wanted to hear as they were left out of the 12-team field.
After going 10-2, with losses to Miami and Texas A&M, Notre Dame had a resume that was among the top teams in the country, but were jumped by Alabama and the Hurricanes late in the process, knocking them out and now they’ll play in a non-CFP bowl game.
Everyone in Blue and Gold isn’t happy with today’s results, and rightfully so. It’s an extremely disappointing afternoon, and here are my initial thoughts on Notre Dame getting snubbed in the College Football Playoff.
The best twelve teams aren’t in the College Football Playoff
We’re all arguing about Miami, Alabama, Notre Dame and overlooking that TWO groups of 5 schools are occupying spots when they have zero business playing in it this year.
Tulane lost 45-10 to Ole Miss.
JMU only played ONE P4 school and lost by 14.
What a mess

How can you make an argument that these are the best twelve teams to compete for a championship? Sure, I get the rules that forced Tulane and James Madison into the field, but are they really necessary? At this point, it’s just ridiculous to think that either of those teams could win it all. Notre Dame was viewed as a major player to win the CFP, but we’ll never know if they could have or not. It’s an absolute travesty.
Why didn’t Miami move over Notre Dame earlier?
Hunter Yurachek says BYU losing opened the door for Miami to jump them.
“Then we had that side-by-side comparison that everybody had been hungry for.”
“The one metric that we had to fall back on was the head-to-head.”

I get the head-to-head, the committee almost had to put Miami in over the Irish due to it, but why wait until the final rankings to do it. They had said they’ve been in the same tier for a few weeks now, and that didn’t matter before? Why does it matter now? It’s just so confusing as to why they opted to make this change now. it’s just so frustrating that the committee isn’t consistent with its process. There has to be a more solid, clean and outspoken criteria for selecting teams going forward, not changing every season.
Alabama should not have been in either
Notre Dame should have been in over Alabama

This was the spot that was taken from Notre Dame, and why everyone was up in arms last week when the Crimson Tide jumped the Irish. We could all see the writing on the wall, the slight move gave the committee leeway to keep Alabama where they were with a loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship game, which is exactly what happened. Do you really think that a team that lost to a 5-7 Florida State should be in? Quality losses matter, and this one should have been a red flag for the Tide.
Bonus – Notre Dame still doesn’t need to join a conference
Today’s precedent:
Notre Dame, get your butt in a conference.

It’s what many are saying after Notre Dame was snubbed, and I really don’t think this is going to force the Irish’s hand to join a conference. They love the flexibility of their schedule, and knew what the goal was coming into the year, split the first two and win the rest. Unfortunately, the first part didn’t work out for Notre Dame, and that’s why they ended up in the position they are today. There is no need for the Irish to join a conference, and if athletic director Pete Bevacqua gets his way, the CFP will move to 16-teams and this just won’t be an issue going forward.
