We are a mere 9 days away from the start of real college football and there is still much to do and much to figure out, for us fans and for those more involved in the sport.

Fans need to figure out the details of their Week 1 viewing experience, like what to wear, what to eat and drink, which games to put on which TV, etc. And while I personally have a good idea (I’m thinking my new red gameday polo and khaki shorts, but open for suggestions), there’s still a ways to go.

Coaches have a little more on their plate, trying to lock in depth charts, game plans for their first game, and, of course, their outfits for Week 1 (I hear Kirby is thinking black gameday polo, white visor, and khaki pants).

But like the kid in Matilda eating chocolate cake, conference commissioners have even more on their plate these days. In Lane Kiffin’s most recent and most successful attempt to gain attention yet, he has decided to start poaching players from a recently untapped source: the NFL.

The river of football, so it is called, has always flowed from College to NFL. Plain and simple. But now, Lane is trying to reverse the flow by assisting failed NFL players in their attempts to return to college football. But the sport of football is like the mighty Mississip’, and while some rivers can get away with flowing against traditional thinking (the Nile, most famously), not even the greatest beavers in the world could reverse this flow.

Luckily, the SEC swiftly shut this down, at least for now. With these penalties in place, it is unlikely any SEC school would be willing to bet on a player being that valuable. While college football is still like the wild west, at least it’s not like the wilder west.

The best part was Kiffin’s attempt at reasoning, saying if he didn’t do this, then someone else would. That’s going to be my excuse the next time I get caught leaving work early to golf. Someone is going to get a double-bogey on #1 at 3:00 pm, and it better be me.

We don’t know how this newest college football saga will turn out. But one thing we do know is that 9 days from now, summer Santa Claus will bring us a Georgia football game wrapped neatly in red and black.

Put your Tropicalias and sliders out, and let’s hope the sport summer Santa sees is one we still recognize.
