Thursday Dots: Getting Dark Earlier

Well, you asked me if I’ll forget my Dots
I guess I will, someday
I don’t like it, but I guess things happen that way
- If you’re looking for solace about the Husky Football program during a tough week, the Seattle Times is probably not the best place to start. First, Percy Allen has an article outlining how Oregon’s financial dominance has put it in a far better position than UW. Even when Dante Moore got injured against USC, the Ducks were able to slide in a highly-paid backup in Dylan Raiola. Meanwhile, the Dawgs have a struggling, healthy QB but no where to turn for a reprieve.
- Just a bit further down the page, Jon Wilner highlights the “panic meter” about UW’s early-season performance. Even though the Dawgs came out ahead in the Apple Cup, WSU’s subsequent performances show that the victory is not a great accomplishment. Elsewhere on the west coach, Wilner praises UCLA, Utah, and BYU as being ahead of expectations for the season so far.
- Is Washington’s inexperience one of the root causes of the underperformance? 247Sports has a deep dive on true freshmen getting playing time across the country and the Dawgs earn special mention as one of the teams leaning especially heavily on first-years. Interestingly, the article also points out how much production this week’s opponent, USC, is getting from their own freshmen.
- One of the factors in UW’s reliance on young players is the departure of several more experienced players in the transfer portal. Dawgman looks at how UW’s transfer exits played last week. Adam Mohammed remains a great “what-if” after putting up a solid 81 total yards against a strong Clemson defense. Zachary Hennig had another strong game for Arizona at Center (a pain point for the Dawgs) while breakout OL transfer Paki Finau had a bye.
- If you’re desperate for some good news, check out UW Men’s Soccer. The defending champs had the B1G Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week in Zach Ramsey and Stockton Short. Ramsey has been a machine, with 14 goals in 9 games so far to lead the nation. The Dawgs beat #22 Rutgers 4-1 last week en route to this honors and will be back in action against Wisconsin on Friday night in Seattle.
