Authorities say the children spent roughly two days alone before both adults were discovered. The investigation remains ongoing.

Two young sisters were left alone in a Pennsylvania home for roughly two days alongside the bodies of their mother and her ex-boyfriend before anyone discovered them, authorities say.

According to PEOPLE, citing local outlets WTAE, KDKA and WPXI, the bodies of 31-year-old Lamara Baldwin and 42-year-old Lamont Dunlap were found Monday, Aug. 3, at a residence on Franklin Avenue in Wilkinsburg. Allegheny County police believe both had died on July 31, based on evidence at the scene.

The children, ages 1 and 3, were found alive and have since been placed in the custody of Child and Youth Services. Investigators reported no indications of trauma at the scene, though the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting autopsies to determine how both adults died. No cause of death has been released.

For neighbors, the discovery has left more questions than answers. “I just don’t know what could have possibly happened,” John Sloan told KDKA, describing the situation as “a mystery.”

WPXI reported that in the days before she was found, Baldwin had spoken publicly about struggling with her mental health during a Facebook livestream, telling viewers she was exhausted by the circumstances she was navigating. Authorities have not indicated whether those remarks bear any connection to the cause of death, and the investigation remains open.

The case has drawn attention in the Pittsburgh area not only for its grim circumstances but for what it suggests about how easily a household can go unchecked for days. Two small children, one barely a toddler, were left without adult care in a home where no one thought to check in, a detail that has weighed heavily on the surrounding community.

For now, the sisters are in the care of county services as officials work to determine what happened inside the residence.
