Tony Rock says his desire to work with his older brother comes from admiration, not resentment over his success.
Tony Rock says he has never stopped supporting his older brother, Chris Rock, despite never getting the opportunity to work alongside him on screen. During a recent podcast appearance, the comedian opened up about their relationship, family expectations and why a professional collaboration with Chris would still mean a lot to him.
Tony Rock has spent nearly three decades establishing himself as a comedian and entertainer in his own right. But he is yet to get the chance to share the screen with his brother, Chris Rock. During an Aug. 7 appearance on “Deep Meaningful Conversations” With Na’im Lynn, Tony discussed his career, family and his long-standing desire to collaborate with Chris, which has yet to come to fruition. Tony pointed out that while he understands why it hasn’t happened, that’s something he longs for, even in the smallest capactiy, especially as he shows up for Chris in every way that he can.
“Nobody is a bigger fan of Chris Rock than Tony Rock,” he said, emphasizing that his frustration does not come from resentment toward his brother’s success.
The brothers’ approach to their careers has been discussed publicly before. In a 2018 interview with PEOPLE, Tony described Chris’ philosophy toward family members entering entertainment as essentially one of independence. Relatives were expected to build their own careers rather than receive opportunities simply because they were family.
Tony said he applied a similar philosophy to their younger brother, Jordan Rock, when he was starting out. Rather than immediately taking Jordan on the road, Tony wanted him to develop his own experience first. Once Jordan had established himself, Tony eventually gave him an opportunity to tour.
That history helps explain the distinction Tony appears to be making now. He understands the expectation, but he still wishes Chris would open the door to a professional collaboration.
