One of Alabama football‘s expected additions in the NCAA transfer portal won’t be heading to Tuscaloosa after all.
After initially committing to Alabama and coach Kalen DeBoer on Monday, top transfer portal running back Hollywood Smothers will be taking his talents to Austin to play for coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns in 2026, On3’s Hayes Fawcett reported Sunday.
Smothers is the first player to flip from Alabama in the 2026 transfer portal class.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound tailback had been set to join the Crimson Tide after a successful sophomore season in the ACC with coach Dave Doeren’s NC State Wolfpack. Smothers rushed for 939 yards and six touchdowns on 160 carries in 11 games. He also had 37 receptions for 189 yards and a touchdown.
Smothers is listed as the No. 3 overall player in the transfer portal and the No. 2 running back, according to On3’s rankings.
Alabama was 15th in the SEC in average rushing yards per game with 104.13 this past season with senior Jam Miller primarily leading the way.
