MANHATTAN — New Kansas State football coach Collin Klein knows a thing or two about the quarterback position, and it’s worth noting the established relationships he has with signal callers at the high school level as he takes over his alma mater.
Klein, who was responsible for bringing Avery Johnson to Kansas State and developing the likes of Skylar Thompson and Will Howard, will have to fill the quarterback position after Johnson runs out of eligibility after the 2026 season, assuming the quarterback stays in Manhattan.
Klein has been recruiting some of the top quarterbacks in the country to play for him at Texas A&M, who could end up on Kansas State‘s radar in the years ahead.
Here’s a look at the quarterbacks he’s been targeting.
Carson White, Iowa Colony (Texas)
White already has Kansas State on his radar following Klein’s hiring. Rivals considers him a four-star prospect and the No. 26 quarterback in his class. The dual-threat recently listed K-State in his top schools, along with Houston, Baylor, Auburn, Virginia Tech, Kentucky and Utah.
White threw for almost 2,000 yards and 32 touchdowns, while rushing for 678 yards and a pair of scores during his junior year. White told Rivals that he has a relationship with Klein because the coach spent plenty of time at Iowa County recruiting four-star wide receiver Jayden Warren to Texas A&M. He told the site that K-State is on his shortlist of places to take an official visit.
“I talk with Coach Klein pretty often and we built a good relationship with each other,” White said. “Having a past connection with him is going to play a big factor.”
Ty Knutson, Smithson Valley (Texas)
Klein gave Knutson an offer to play at Texas A&M. The 6-foot-3 QB has a three-star 247Sports Composite rating and is ranked as the nation’s 52nd-best quarterback. He recently visited Texas and Texas A&M, while also holding offers from Oklahoma State, Tulane, Houston and Texas Tech.
Knutson performed in front of Klein during a summer camp in June, and the Aggies extended the offer in the following week.
Weston Nielsen, Bastrop (Texas)
Nielsen is a consensus four-star prospect and is ranked among the best in the 2027 class. He’s ranked as high as 13th by 247Sports.
Texas A&M was among the first to offer him, extending an offer in June 2024 after a camp. He was in attendance for the Aggies’ 2024 opener.
Nielsen will announce his decision on Dec. 13, and it doesn’t appear Kansas State will be considered. He may be a name to monitor in the future.
Christopher Vargas, St. John’s Prep (Massachusetts)
The biggest schools in the country are courting the five-star, No. 2 quarterback in the 2028 class, and he earned his Texas A&M offer from Klein and Mike Elko on Oct. 4, after the Aggies’ win over Mississippi State.
Donald Tabron II, Cass Technical (Detroit)
Tabron, another five-star 2028 QB, was on the same gameday visit at Vargas. He received an offer from Texas A&M a day after his visit.
