The most important part of the college football season is here, and now it is turning into the most chaotic time for the Oregon Ducks. They managed to defeat the Washington Huskies last week in an enormous rivalry game to clinch a home game in the College Football Playoff, but it’s hard to believe their full focus is on that now that they’ve lost both of their coordinators.

Offensive coordinator Will Stein accepted a head coaching job with the Kentucky Wildcats earlier this week, and on the other side of the ball, Tosh Lupoi will be leading the California Golden Bears next season. Both coaches have vowed to stay on with the Ducks through the duration of the playoffs, but it is likely still a difficult thing for players and the rest of the coaching staff to handle.

It is glaringly obvious that regardless of his impending departure, Lupoi is still deeply connected to Oregon.

“Over my dead body would I be walking out on the young men in this organization, if given the choice. And so I’m gonna finish what we’ve started there,” the defensive coordinator said to reporters.

It may seem like a foregone conclusion that both coaches would remain with the team, but just this week we saw new LSU Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin leave his team to fend for themselves in the playoffs immediately after accepting the job. The decision by Lupoi and Stein to fulfill the multi-year commitment they made to Oregon just speaks to the character they possess and the culture radiating out of Eugene.
