Transfer portal closes: Top available college football quarterbacks

The NCAA transfer portal closed Friday after opening Jan. 2. Student-athletes could only enter the NCAA transfer portal during this period, but can still sign with a school at any point since they are in the transfer portal.
Tennessee is still assembling its 2026 football roster.
Following the Vols’ 2025 football season concluding in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30, 2025, Tennessee had redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Merklinger enter the transfer portal. He transferred to UConn.
Other quarterbacks on roster were senior Joey Aguilar, freshman George MacIntyre and freshman Mason Phillips.
2026 quarterback prospect Faizon Brandon signed with Tennessee during the early signing period on Dec. 3, 2025. He is from Grimsley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Aguilar joined Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia’s lawsuit to separate junior college and NCAA eligibility. Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports provided an update on his future and eligibility with Tennessee after the 2025 season.
“While a waiver is still being pursued and there’s nothing final yet, it’s currently viewed as unlikely that Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar will be granted an additional year of eligibility, sources tell CBS Sports,” Zenitz announced on social media.
