D’Angelo Ponds isn’t the biggest cornerback on the field, but there’s a good shot he’s the quickest and the fastest. There’s at least one guarantee: he’s the most well prepared.
When Indiana took the field on defense to open the Peach Bowl, he was ready. Oregon quarterback Dante Moore dropped back and looked left, his eyes locked on Malik Benson, the Ducks’ leading receiver this season. Ponds, covering Benson, had his eyes locked on those of Moore and never shied away.
Moore tried #5.
He got 6.
It was the opening score of a 56-22 rout that sent Indiana to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. A blowout that might not happen if it weren’t for Ponds’ relentless preparation and shrewd approach to his position and play.
This wasn’t Ponds’ first interception as a Hoosier, not even his first return for a touchdown. He had one in 2024 against Washington, reading a screen and jumping the route to take Huskies quarterback Will Rogers’ pass all the way back to the endzone, rolling out the big red carpet.
Moore’s just the latest quarterback to try 5 and end up getting six the other way. The great folks at BreakingT have commemorated this with an officially licensed shirt that you can find below. Be sure to check out their whole Indiana Hoosiers collection too!
