TTU’s Brendan Sorsby Releases Statement on Gambling Addiction Recovery

On Tuesday, Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby received news on his eligibility for the upcoming season.

Per Pete Thamel of ESPN, the NCAA denied his request to have his eligibility reinstated for the upcoming season after he completed his 35-day in-patient rehab at Algamus in Goodyear, Arizona, per Pete Thamel of ESPN.

The decision from the NCAA was not unexpected, as Sorsby filed for a temporary injunction against the NCAA. His case will be heard on June 1 in Lubbock, Texas. Sorsby is represented by well-known sports attorney Jeffrey Kessler.

Via Instagram, Sorsby took responsibility for his actions and said he believes he is “no longer fully at the mercy” of his gambling addiction and anxiety disorder.

“This is the start of a new beginning that I feel fortunate to have,” Sorsby wrote. “I know recovery from addiction is a long road and I hope that my experience has in even some small way reduced the stigma associated with speaking up about addiction and getting help.

“I am committed to my ongoing treatment and being a resource to many other student-athletes and other kids out there dealing with gambling addiction and other mental health issues.”

Sorsby intends to play for Texas Tech in the upcoming season.

“With the support of my coaches, teammates and the university, I’m looking forward to returning to campus in Lubbock,” he wrote. “If I’m blessed and fortunate enough to have the opportunity to continue my college career at Texas Tech, I know I will get the support I need, including through the school’s Center for Students in Addiction Recovery.

“I am deeply sorry to everyone I’ve disappointed and am committed to the hard and necessary work ahead.

The June 1 court date should give the talented quarterback a buffer if he loses his case for eligibility. If he cannot play for TTU this fall, Sorsby is expected to be a hot prospect if the NFL has a supplemental draft this summer.

Sorsby was one of the most sought-after recruits in the transfer portal this offseason. He threw for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions for Cincinnati in 2025.

Texas Tech won the Big 12 and made it to the College Football Playoff quarterfinal last season. With Sorsby, TTU would be expected to be a favorite to win the conference and make the CFP again this season. Without Sorsby, the Red Raiders would have serious questions about the quarterback position with backup quarterback Will Hammond coming off an ACL injury.
