Tulane's Jon Sumrall out on Auburn football coaching search | Report

AUBURN — Jon Sumrall won’t be the next head coach of Auburn football according to a report from FootballScoop, which reported Saturday, Nov. 29, that the Tulane head coach has withdrawn his name from Auburn‘s search.

FootballScoop reported earlier in the week that Florida was ramping up its pursuit of Sumrall, which included a pitch from former Gators head coach Urban Meyer and a promise of full autonomy over the program.

According to the report, that was in contrast to Auburn’s discussions with Sumrall, which included frequent conversation about retaining some of Hugh Freeze‘s staff, including interim head coach DJ Durkin and other off-field staffers. Auburn athletics director John Cohen has said publicly he’d like to keep Durkin around, regardless of who gets the job replacing Freeze.

Multiple outlets, including CBS Sports, have reported in recent days that Florida has pulled ahead of Auburn in the race for Sumrall, who is 18-7 in two seasons with the Green Wave and 41-11 overall as an FBS head coach. Sumrall has also been heavily discussed as an option for Ole Miss should Lane Kiffin decide to leave the Rebels.

While Durkin appears to be the clearest remaining option for Auburn, South Florida’s Alex Golesh is a name to monitor. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported on College GameDay that Golesh and the Tigers had been in contact about the job.

The presumed decision date is looming for Auburn, as Cohen has been steadfast in his desire to name a new head coach within 48 hours of the Iron Bowl, which kicks off at 6:30 p.m. CT Saturday.
