Two More Big Ten Records in Buckeyes' Jeremiah Smith's Sights on Saturday

Ohio State's superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith very well could have just about every receiving record in his name by the time this season is all said and done. With the way that he has started the year, there is not one mark that is out of reach, and his chase for all of them is going to be so much fun to watch.

On Saturday, he has a legitimate chance to chase down two more Big Ten records. As it stands entering Week 6, Smith is just four touchdowns behind Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards in overtaking the all-time conference touchdown record.

He is also just 408 yards behind Purdue's John Standeford for the all-time lead in receiving yards.

It is more than likely that he will need two games to track both of those marks down, but who knows with this guy. I don't think anyone would be surprised if he went for 400 yards in a game.

While unlikely to happen today, maybe they will just have to wait a couple of weeks for those to become official.

The comparisons to these all-time greats continue to be so funny. Edwards set the conference record in 44 career games, while Standeford needed 48 games to set his mark.

Saturday will Smith's 36th game of his career.

What he is doing is both totally unprecidented while being incredibly shocking when the numbers are lined up side by side. We are getting to the point where Smith is making the ridiculous seem totally normal.

Play after play, catch after catch, he makes it look so routine and so easy that it is becoming expected. It is really important to consistently remember that what he is doing is not normal at all, and we are witnessing greatness week in and week out.

For Saturday's game, they are not going to need Smith's best. This is a game that he could just show up at the stadium and be the best player on the field right away. Full stop. That is not his mindset, and it will never be.

The result of Saturday's game against Maryland will hardly be in the balance but that doesn't mean that they don't need to feed Smith. If Jeremiah only plays a half of football, hopefully he has 10-plus targets, over 8 catches and maybe 100 to 150 yards and a pair of scores.

Then, put it on ice for the rest of the day. The Buckeyes are getting ready for three weeks of war coming after today.
