As soon as Ty Simpson stepped up to the podium Monday, Dec. 15, days away from the Crimson Tide’s first round CFP game against Oklahoma, the Alabama football quarterback was asked about his health.

Simpson’s answer was quick and to the point.

“Yeah, I’m great,” Simpson said.

Simpson has not missed any time as Alabama’s starting quarterback. But after a significant decline in his performance over the past month — leading an offense that has not scored more than 30 points against an FBS opponent since the Tennessee win — and with facing 10 sacks in his last three FBS games, Simpson’s status has been put into question.

In the days leading up to the CFP first round game against Oklahoma, Alabama players continue to speak highly of Simpson.

“Honestly, I mean, just resiliency,” Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams said when asked what he’s seen in Simpson since the SEC Championship Game loss to Georgia. “Mentally, physically, he’s just a guy. I wouldn’t rather have any quarterback in the country.”

Simpson has seen his share of struggles since Alabama’s last game against Oklahoma. He has not eclipsed 212 yards passing. He’s completed 54.5% of his pass attempts and has four touchdown passes and three interceptions.

But Simpson is “excited” to show what he can do against the Sooners Friday.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Simpson said. “We’re in the College Football Playoff. At this point in the season, I don’t know a team that’s healthy at all. Fired me up. Ready to go.”

Alabama kicks off against Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19 on ABC.
