UCF Survives Georgia State In Bounce House Thriller

The Acrisure Bounce House hosted a chaotic Saturday night as the UCF Knights held off the Georgia State Panthers 44-30. Georgia State fans watched their team take a late first-half lead only to see UCF pull away in the second half. The final score shows a game that swung wildly between both sides before the Knights secured the win.

A Quarterback Shift and a Ground Game

UCF started the night without their main signal-caller due to injury. FIU transfer Keyone Jenkins took the helm and managed the offense with a steady hand. He threw for just 86 yards and one touchdown while adding two scores on the ground. UCF Coach Scott Frost praised the backup after the game. “I thought [Jenkins] did pretty well,” Frost said. “He’s played a lot of football and that shows.” Due to the game’s nature, he did not throw much tonight, yet the game plan includes many plays we trust him to execute.

While the passing game stayed quiet, the running backs dominated the field. Duke Watson scored two touchdowns while rushing for 177 yards, a career high. Watson averaged 12.6 yards per carry on the night. The entire UCF backfield combined for 304 yards and four rushing touchdowns. Frost credited the staff’s planning for the success. “I thought the running backs played exceptionally well,” Frost said. “It was a really good scheme idea by our staff.”

Defense Makes Big Plays at Key Moments

Georgia State showed life in the second quarter with a 14-play drive that ended in a touchdown. True freshman Qwantavius Wiggins then broke a 78-yard run to give the Panthers their first lead. UCF struggled to answer immediately but got a huge break when linebacker Jaleel Culbreath blocked a Panther punt. That play gave UCF the ball deep in Georgia State territory. The Knights settled for a field goal to cut the lead, but the momentum had shifted.

UCF’s defense also forced three interceptions during the game. They stopped the Panthers on a fourth-down attempt early on to keep UCF alive. A holding call negated a Jenkins touchdown, but a pass interference penalty on Georgia State gave UCF another chance. Watson took advantage of the new downs with a 14-yard run for a score. These defensive stops and special teams plays were the difference in a game that stayed close until the end.

Close Games Define the Season

The first quarter saw UCF pull away with a six-play, 76-yard drive that featured a 30-yard touchdown pass from Jenkins to Waden Charles. Georgia State kicker Samer Layous put the Panthers up 24-20 at halftime with a final-play score, but UCF outscored them 24-6 in the second half. The game came down to execution in tight moments. Frost noted the nature of college football in the Big 12 season. “There’s gonna be a lot of games like that. “You must find ways to win close games since everyone is so close, he told reporters.

Georgia State will look to bounce back from this loss as they host Northern Illinois on September 26, before hosting Old Dominion on October 2. UCF heads into their next matchup with a renewed sense of urgency. Both teams showed they can score, but only UCF could make the stops when it mattered most. The Panthers need to find a way to hold leads if they want to climb the standings.
