Trent Hendrick is eligible to see action for the UCLA Bruins after all. Amid the Big Ten’s new ruling banning players’ eligibility under certain conditions, Hendrick appears to have gotten the green light to play for UCLA football in 2026.
Under the conference’s new rule, players who declared for the NFL draft and did not withdraw, those who appeared on an NFL roster, or those who signed a professional contract are not allowed to be part of a Big Ten roster.
Apparently, none of those categories deem Hendrick ineligible, paving the way for his successful transfer from the James Madison Dukes to UCLA football.

“We support the Big Ten’s adoption of the new professional football players rule and understand the importance of having clear and consistent eligibility standards across the conference,” UCLA athletic director Martin Jarmond said in a statement (h/t Ben Bolch of the New York Post).
“We have been in communication with the Big Ten throughout this process, and our student-athletes are eligible under the guidelines adopted today. We are excited to turn our full attention to the upcoming season and our opener vs. California on Sept. 5.”
Hendrick would be a big addition to UCLA football’s stop unit. He played four seasons in James Madison colors, seeing action in 49 games and racking up 209 combined tackles to go along with 19.0 tackles for loss, 6.0 sacks and five passes defended. He was named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year last season.
The Bruins won just three games in the 2025 season and is now under a new head coach in Bob Chesney.
