The UCLA Bruins pulled off a massive upset on Saturday, October 10th, outplaying and outlasting the Oregon Ducks, 17-15.
The Bruins were a 10-point underdog at kickoff, playing on the road against an Oregon team that had just handled the USC Trojans and seemed to be surging.
The Bruins’ defense shows up
Oregon had to bench transfer quarterback Dylan Raiola, who was replacing Dante Moore after the starter suffered a concussion against USC.
Raiola was a former five-star high school quarterback who joined the Ducks after two years as a starter at Nebraska, hoping to sit for a year and learn the offense before taking over for Moore.
After a great game in Moore’s absence, Raiola carried confidence into Saturday, but the Bruins’ defense turned it into a disaster.
Raiola went 6-for-19 with two interceptions and a fumble. He wasn’t the only player to turn the ball over for the Ducks; the team totaled five fumbles.
The Ducks didn’t get going until Raiola sat down, as third-string quarterback Brock Thomas went 11-for-15 with a touchdown.
It was too little, too late in the fourth quarter as Oregon ran out of time. The team failed to get a field goal on the last drive of the game.
Ultimately, an uber-talented Oregon offense had just 73 rushing yards and 199 passing yards.
UCLA’s offense does just enough
The Bruins lost their starting quarterback, Nico Iamaleava, to a lower-leg injury. He was 10-for-17 for 162 yards and two interceptions, but his playmaking clearly faltered after he left.
Backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach went 3-for-6 for 43 yards and a touchdown.
Still, neither quarterback had much to do, as the UCLA running game delivered, with Wayne Night scoring a touchdown on 22 carries for 103 rushing yards.
