The UConn football program has sent another star running back to Michigan State.
Norwalk native Cam Edwards announced his commitment to the Spartans on Wednesday following a historic redshirt-junior season for the Huskies that included 1,240 rushing yards, the fifth-most in a single-season in program history, and 15 rushing touchdowns, which is tied for fourth-most ever.
Edwards was named Connecticut Offensive Player of the Year by the Walter Camp Football Foundation on Tuesday.
He follows in the path of another former UConn running back, Nate Carter, who played two seasons in Storrs and had his 2022 campaign cut short by injuries before transferring to Michigan State. Carter ran for 1,297 yards and nine touchdowns over two years with the Spartans before finding a spot with the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL.
Michigan State hired Pat Fitzgerald from Northwestern to replace Jonathan Smith as head coach this offseason and hosted Edwards earlier this week.
Norwalk’s Cam Edwards accepted the challenge and has become UConn’s workhorse in the backfield
Edwards played both sides of the ball at Norwalk High before joining the UConn football program as a defensive back in 2022, Jim Mora’s first year as head coach. He was shortly moved to running back due to injuries that thinned out the position group and made an immediate impact as a redshirt-freshman, running for 618 yards and four touchdowns on 123 carries. He also caught 15 passes for 132 yards and an additional TD.
The 5-foot-11, 210-pound back upped his production in 2024, running 146 times for 830 yards and eight touchdowns while catching 13 passes for 148 yards and two scores.
He entered the transfer portal shortly after Mora left for the head coaching job at Colorado State but still played in the Fenway Bowl, where he recorded his sixth 100-yard game of the season with 11 carries for 108 yards and a touchdown in the loss to Army.
“I told the guys, ever since I entered the (transfer) portal, I told the guys, ‘I’m going to play this game.’ I felt it was right for me to go out and play one last game with my brothers. That was my ‘why,’ why I wanted to play for my guys and for UConn football,” he said after that game. “Me being a Connecticut guy, it was really the culture that was built here, guys come in ready to fight. Things happen, but the sky’s the limit for UConn football. UConn football is back.”
After just three full seasons at running back for the Huskies, Edwards ranks fifth all-time in both career rushing yards (2,690) and touchdowns (27).
He will have at least one familiar face in East Lansing with offensive tackle Ben Murawski already announcing his decision to transfer to the Spartans.
