UM Commit A'Mir Sears Shines in Christopher Columbus Upset Over No. 1 Bishop Gorman

In Saturday’s 33-28 win over No. 1 Bishop Gorman, Christopher Columbus two-way star and Miami Hurricanes commit A’Mir Sears shined with two interceptions and three touchdowns.

After reclassifying from 2028 to 2027, the Miami native will play for “The U” sooner rather than later. He’s an elite five-star top-20 recruit who received several Power Four scholarships, including from Florida, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas A&M, among several others. He reclassified on July 28, then committed to the Hurricanes three days later.

Sears joins an elite group of recruits, alongside five-star cornerback Donte Wright, five-star quarterback Israel Abrams, five-star edge rusher Jaiden Bryant, and five-star wide receiver Nick Lennear.

The Hurricanes currently have 21 verbal commits, which ranks second nationally, according to 247Sports Composite.

It will be interesting to see if Sears continues to play both sides of the field at the collegiate Power Four level. Former Colorado Buffaloes Travis Hunter was the most recent to succeed in both roles at wide receiver and defensive back. He won the 2024 Heisman Trophy, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, and received All-American honors. 

However, Sears is more focused on his own legacy rather than comparisons.

"No Travis Hunter," he said on The Nevin Shapiro Show. "I'm the new wave."

The Hurricanes have secured elite future young talent following a trip to the National Championship game. It delivered a different perception about the Coral Gables program. After two decades of mediocrity, Mario Cristobal has successfully turned “The U” around.

Sears will share a wide receiver room with rising star Malachi Toney and defensive back/ballhawk Bryce Fitzgerald. Last season, as freshmen, both delivered a significant, immediate impact. Sears is projected to do the same ahead of the 2027 college football season.

The five-star recruit is known as a corner who can lock down playmakers, quick and explosive, an elite route runner, and can make contested catches.

Sears is part of a rejuvenated trend of local prospects electing to stay home rather than leave the Sunshine State. The Hurricanes’ 2027 recruiting class has seven other players from Florida. However, the next challenge will be to keep Sears’ commitment. He has yet to shut down his recruitment.

Although a flip appears unlikely, today’s world of college sports is more unpredictable than ever.

Sears grew up a Hurricanes fan, along with the rest of his family. It will be difficult to pull him away from home, but it’s not a risk worth taking. Sears' commitment will be valuable until National Signing Day.
