In this battle of two ACC teams, this has the makings of an ugly game.

In their first two games against TCU and East Tennessee State, the Tar Heels have looked just that — ugly. In Standard Down metrics, they’re currently 78th in Success Rate and 127th in explosiveness.

Billy Edwards takes over for UNC as quarterback, and so far, I’m torn. Against TCU, he had an extraordinarily mediocre game, completing 57% of his passes with no touchdowns, and then against ETSU, he expectedly had a better game.

Even though Clemson looked horrendous against LSU in Week 1, I don’t anticipate Edwards’ good fortune continuing.

This is a pretty predictable team, and they like to stretch out plays. Don’t expect Edwards to make many explosive plays. It was much easier for him to do it against ETSU, but the talent discrepancy was significant.

I do want to see the Heels utilize their run game more, though. They have a pretty solid trio featuring Benjamin Hall, Jaylen McGill, and Demon June; however, they rank 99th in rush play rate.

On the other side of the ball, a Belichick-coached team is always going to be responsible on the defensive end.

Even though the Heels lost to TCU in Week 1, they limited the Frogs to just 15 points all game, including a monster game from DL Xavier Lewis. The sophomore lineman recorded two sacks, along with 4.5 tackles for loss and seven total tackles.

Additionally, senior linebacker Derek McDonald was strong in that bout, posting 11 total tackles.

Clemson has not run into great luck. The first two games of the Tigers’ season were delayed due to rainstorms. And in the first one against LSU, the Tigers got ransacked 51-10, and then barely snuck by Georgia Southern in Week 2.

The clock’s ticking for head coach Dabo Swinney, who seems to be on his ninth life.

Quarterback Tait Reynolds is going to be the starter moving forward, it seems. After the Christopher Vizzina experiment failed miserably, Reynolds stepped in relief against Georgia Southern and threw for 178 yards on a 61% completion rate.

Statistically, the Tigers are at the bottom of the barrel.

Their run defense has been pretty porous and has a difficult time stopping opposing third-down drives.

There are two clear alphas on this defense, though, and they’re defensive end Will Heldt and cornerback Elliot Washington II.

This season, Washington has already matched last season’s total on pass breakups through two games. Heldt, on the other hand, has always been a gamebreaker, posting 7.5 sacks last season, with two already this year.

The offense with Reynolds fully running the show will be a spectacle. Through two games, the Clemson offense has had a rough time getting going, ranking in the bottom 10 in Success Rate, PPA, and explosiveness for standard metric downs.

Not only that, the run game hasn’t taken off one bit, with the team ranking 129th in Success Rate.

As of this writing, the total for this game is listed at 43.5, and I expect that number to drop as the week moves on.

You couldn’t convince me to pick the Over here.

In both games played, Carolina has hit the under, mainly because of the strong foundation it has on the defensive end. But also because the Tar Heels’ offense is pretty anemic.

Secondly, Clemson hasn’t proven to have done anything right on the offensive side, so unless Reynolds becomes a star midgame, I’m sticking with my under pick. And like its counterparts, I do think Clemson has a pretty decent defensive corps.

Pick: Under 43.5
