Jun. 30—GRAND FORKS — The UND football program has gone to Texas in back-to-back recruiting classes to pick up a wide receiver.
Brayden Mueller, a 6-foot-2, 180-pound prospect from the Austin area, committed to UND's 2027 recruiting class after developing a relationship through new UND wide receivers coach K.J. Maye.
Maye, who played college football with former UND offensive coordinator Isaac Fruechte at the University of Minnesota and later had NFL and CFL playing stints, was hired during the offseason by UND head coach Eric Schmidt.
In the 2026 recruiting class, UND signed wide receiver Delvin Cook Jr., of the Dallas area. Coaches have been high on Cook's potential.
In Texas, Mueller is transferring from a 5A program last season at Hendrickson to a 6A program — Texas' highest classification — at Hutto.
"The way I look at it, I was at a high competition already and wanted to place myself in the best situation, so I went up another level," Mueller said. "It's definitely great feeling because you know you're going against the highest competition. Texas, Florida and California have the hardest to play against, so I'm preparing myself for the next level. I should get a good base to have to go against the hardest competition in the state."
Mueller caught 32 passes for 703 yards last season in nine games. He caught six touchdowns and averaged 22.2 yards per catch and 78.1 yards per game en route to second team all-district honors.
Mueller had offers from Abilene Christian and Lamar.
Mueller wasn't overly familiar with the FCS program in the north before being recruited by Maye.
"I had never heard about it but after talking with him and my parents and my coaches, doing some research, I liked it more," Mueller said. "I definitely wanted to get to an official visit and see all the hype around the school and everything they have."
Mueller was impressed by UND's visit.
"It was family-oriented … the players brought me in as a family," Mueller said. "The weight room and facilities they have are great. They're definitely the top for the FCS. The coaches showed me and my family love all weekend."
Like many in the 2027 recruiting class, Mueller plans to enroll early at UND to take part in spring ball.
"I want to get there and adjust versus adjusting in the summer," Mueller said. "Going there early is the best bet for me. I'm excited to get with those guys and be introduced to the offense."
UND's 2027 recruiting class is nearly finalized with 22 public commitments. Mueller is the second commitment in the class from Texas, joining Carson Wilson, a corner from Garland, Texas.
