The Heisman Trophy is the highest individual honor a player can receive in college football.
Since the award was first given out in 1935, the iconic trophy is handed out to the player deemed the best in the nation by a panel of media voters, fans and previous living members of the Heisman fraternity.
Generally four Heisman finalists are invited to New York for the pageantry of the award’s ceremony. But on a recent episode of “The Triple Option” podcast, Hall of Fame coach Urban Meyer said that he thinks up to 10 players should have the chance to be honored in the Big Apple.
Meyer: ‘I’d invite 10 people every year’
During a conversation about Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez and his growing Heisman buzz, Meyer shared his views on Red Raiders head coach Joey Mcguire and how the Heisman is handled.
“Coach [Joey] McGuire, that guy’s tremendous,” Meyer said. “He’s a former high school coach, which tells you how he cares about his players. I love that guy, I love that program. I think they’re doing great.”
“If I was in charge of the Heisman, I’d invite 10 people every year. The 10 top players… Go get another sponsor… I’d send all 10. It’s too good of an experience,” the ex-Buckeye concluded. “I’ve been there, probably, seven, eight times.”
2025 Heisman Trophy odds
According to the betting markets, Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza (whom “The Triple Option” was interviewing) is firmly the odds-on favorite to walk away with the trophy in 2025.
The Hoosiers QB is currently -125 to win the award. Followed by: Ohio State’s Julian Sayin (+225), Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed (+550), Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love (+4000) and Tech’s Rodriguez (+15000).
Mendoza is currently leading the narrative and the early voting, and it’s hard to imagine he finds a way to fumble the trophy unless something catastrophic happens down the stretch for he and IU.
