In the world of college football, teams schedule games with non-conference opponents well in advance. USC recently set up a series with Notre Dame, with games scheduled each year from 2030 through 2033.
USC football was working on a neutral-site series with the alma mater of head coach Lincoln Riley, Texas Tech. That idea is not going to happen, though, according to Brett McMurphy of On3.
“USC has withdrawn from a potential series w/Texas Tech to play in Houston (2027) & Las Vegas (2028), sources told On3. The neutral site games would have pitted Lincoln Riley vs. his alma mater. Discussions b/w the schools were ongoing for the past 6 months but ended this week. ‘It’s dead,’ a source said”, McMurphy posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Riely was a walk-on quarterback at Texas Tech in 2002, sitting behind Kliff Kingsbury and B.J. Symons. The next year, he would become a student assistant for Mike Leach, beginning his coaching career. After graduating, he would spend a year as a graduate assistant before becoming a receivers coach for Texas Tech. He left Texas Tech for East Carolina following the 2009 season.
Texas Tech and USC have faced off three times in their schools’ history. The first two were a home-and-home series in 1978 and 1979. The first game was in Los Angeles, and USC won 17-9. The second game was in Lubbock, and USC won 21-7. The last time the two teams faced off was in 1995 at the Cotton Bowl following the 1994 season. USC took the 55-14 victory in that game.
USC has hopes of making the College Football Playoff in 2026 and opens its schedule on August 29 against San Jose State.
