After wrapping up its regular season with a rivalry victory over UCLA last week, USC rose to No. 17 in the college football AP Poll. This week, the Trojan football team did not play a game, as they spent conference championship weekend at home. Despite this, however, they moved up one spot in Sunday’s final regular season poll, coming in at No. 16.
The majority of teams around USC in the rankings also did not play over the weekend. However, the Trojans did move in front of Virginia, who dropped from No. 16 to No. 20 after falling to Duke in the ACC Championship Game.
USC is one of five Big Ten teams ranked at the conclusion of the regular season. After taking down Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game Saturday night, Indiana rose to No. 1, while the Buckeyes fell two spots to No. 3. In addition, Oregon came in at No. 5, while Michigan slotted in two spots below the Trojans at No. 18.
Of course, USC was also No. 16 in the final College Football Playoff rankings, which are ultimately what matters. The consensus among both sets of rankings is that the Trojans are a good team, but not nearly good enough to be in the playoff. The Trojans will look to change that next season and finally make it to the program’s first CFP.
