It is Judgment Day for USC football and Lincoln Riley against the Oregon Ducks. It's a game many commentators have accurately described as a battle of extremes with no room in between. It's an all-or-nothing moment for both the Trojans and Ducks. One will win and take a dramatic step forward this season. One will lose and suffer a massively harmful and crushing blow. It's either victory and euphoria or complete desolation. There is probably no coming back for the loser, whose season will lie in tatters. "Put up or shut up" is only part of the story. It's the stakes which make the game even more of a crucible than the prove-it components of the duel between these West Coast schools.

Oregon has already lost this season, so a second loss for the Ducks before the start of October would put them on the ropes in terms of making the College Football Playoff. Oregon visits Ohio State later this season, a game the Ducks are likely to lose, so if they drop their second game here, they are likely to lose a third game later in the year, which would very likely knock them out of playoff contention. Dan Lanning, if he can't even make the playoff in a year when Oregon started No. 2 in the preseason polls, will suffer by far his most bitter disappointment as a college head coach.

The stakes are even higher for Lincoln Riley. Unlike Dan Lanning at Oregon, Riley hasn't even made the playoff once at USC. He has gone 0 for 4 and is now in Year 5. With Penn State, Ohio State, and Indiana still on the schedule, a loss here to Oregon would put USC in huge trouble in terms of making the playoff. The noise within the system at USC would be deafening, and Riley's future in Los Angeles would be thrown into doubt. It's a game everyone acknowledges Riley must win to feel safe about his job status.
