BYU fans made sure to let Notre Dame hear the trash talk before and during the teams’ top-10 matchup on Saturday night.

The Cougars’ faithful for their US LBM Coaches Poll No. 3 squad pumped up the volume on the banter after BYU pulled off the upset against the No. 8 Fighting Irish.

Even Utah governor Spencer Cox, a Utah State grad who is in second term, got in some playful remarks. Cox posted on social media on Sunday afternoon and started with comments about Notre Dame as a whole.

“To my Notre Dame friends and fans – thank you for putting up with all the insufferable BYU fans today (me included),” Cox said. “Please take it as the greatest sign of respect how much this win meant to all of us. You are the big brother and the gold standard. Visiting South Bend last year was a dream come true – a true football cathedral. Football fans everywhere aspire to earn the arrogance that you have earned (and I mean that with admiration and respect). You have an incredible coach and team, so please win out. We will be cheering for you the rest of the way.”

Cox then capped his post with a lighthearted jab toward quarterback CJ Carr, referencing the controversy surrounding the officials’ clock miscue and missed pass interference call at the end of the game.

“Oh, and sorry about not getting one last play,” Cox added. “I would have enjoyed watching Carr sail another pass over his receiver…(am I doing it right?)”
