UTEP quarterback Skyler Locklear, who started the final seven games of UTEP’s 2-10 season, will enter the transfer portal when it opens on Jan. 2, per a report from ESPN. He will have one remaining year of eligibility.
The junior Locklear, the starter for most of last season, was a backup to Malachi Nelson when the 2025 season began, but took over after Nelson’s early struggles and after sharing time against Liberty in the fifth game of the year, became the full-time starter.
He finished the year with 117 completions on 211 attempts, with 11 interceptions, 13 touchdowns and 1,418 yards. He also set a program record with 10 rushing touchdowns from the quarterback position. He had 633 rushing yards.
Locklear came to UTEP from Austin Peay, where he served as the backup under coach Scotty Walden during his redshirt freshman year in 2023. He came with Walden to El Paso after the 2023 season, so this will be his second transfer.
Locklear is the 12th Miner expected to enter the transfer portal this year.
