This Saturday night in Tuscaloosa, two of college football’s biggest brands collide when the Alabama Crimson Tide host the visiting LSU Tigers inside of Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
A team that owns a 5-3 overall record (2-3 SEC), the Tigers have certainly seen their share of struggles this season, but make no mistake, LSU is still a very talented team that could come into Tuscaloosa to give Alabama troubles.
In fact, you could certainly make an argument that, compared to previous matchups across the last decade-plus, this will be one of Alabama’s toughest games of the season, even despite being a team that the Crimson Tide are very familiar with.
Following are five LSU Tigers you need to know ahead of Saturday night, as well as how each has performed against the Crimson Tide during their collegiate careers.
Garrett Nussmeier, Quarterback, Fifth-Year Senior
Starting at quarterback for LSU is Garrett Nussmeier, a fifth-year senior who has seen action against Alabama each of the last two seasons, completing 32-of-52 passes for 292 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. This season, Nussmeier is completing 65.9% of passes for 1,806 yards with a 12:5 TD:INT ratio, while also having rushed for a touchdown.
A.J. Haulcy, Safety, Senior
One of the top players on LSU’s defense is senior safety A.J. Haulcy, who leads the Tigers with 63 total tackles this season. Haulcy also owns 0.5 TFL, two interceptions, three pass defenses, and one forced fumble this season, and will be facing Alabama for the first time in his collegiate career.
Barion Brown, Wide Receiver, Senior
Barion Brown is one of LSU’s top wide receivers, as well as one of college football’s top kickoff returners. A transfer from Kentucky who had two receptions for three yards against Alabama in 2023, Brown currently leads LSU with 36 receptions this season for 361 yards and a touchdown, while also having rushed for 33 yards on three attempts, as well as returned 10 kickoffs for 211 yards, averaging 21.1 yards per return.
West Weeks, Linebacker, Graduate Student
West Weeks is one of LSU’s defensive names to know, alongside brother and fellow linebacker Whit Weeks, with the graduate student having recorded no stats in his two career games against Alabama in 2022-23. Weeks has racked up 50 tackles and 1.5 sacks this season, while also leading LSU with 5.5 TFL.
Zavion Thomas, Wide Receiver, Senior
Lastly, Zavion Thomas is another LSU wide receiver who makes an impact on special teams, and has faced Alabama three times since 2022 dating back to his time at Mississippi State, catching a combined two passes for 19 yards, as well as rushing for 18 yards on two attempts. Also returning a combined 10 kick/punt returns for 216 yards in those previous games, Thomas has 20 receptions for 267 yards and three touchdowns, as well as 15 carries for 93 yards, this season, while also having returned nine punts for 96 yards.
