Viktor Hovland Is Chasing Another TOUR Championship—and His Putter Just Caught Fire at East Lake

Viktor Hovland knows how to win at East Lake. Three years after capturing the Tour Championship and FedExCup in dominant fashion, the former Oklahoma State star is putting himself in position to do it again.

And if Thursday was any indication? The putter might be ready to carry him there.

Hovland opened the 2026 Tour Championship with a 6-under 64, putting him in a tie for second place after Round 1.

But the score doesn't even tell the craziest part of the story. Hovland made 141 feet, 3 inches worth of putts.

Yes. 141 FEET.

Hovland Couldn't Miss

For perspective, Hovland entered this week averaging roughly 75 feet of made putts per round this season.

Thursday? He nearly doubled it. His 141 feet, 3 inches led the entire Tour Championship field and represented the third-most made-putt distance of any round in Hovland's PGA Tour career.

He converted seven putts from at least 10 feet, including a nearly 28-footer for birdie on No. 7.

Then on 18? One more. Hovland rolled in a roughly 12-foot birdie putt to finish his round at 6-under and move into the group directly behind Min Woo Lee.

Hovland said afterward that he simply felt comfortable reading East Lake's greens. That's certainly one way to describe it.

There's Something About East Lake

Maybe we shouldn't be surprised. Hovland has played some excellent golf at East Lake throughout his career. But obviously, nothing compares to 2023.

Hovland entered that Tour Championship after winning the BMW Championship and proceeded to dominate again, eventually beating Xander Schauffele by five shots to capture the FedExCup.

Now he's trying to become a champion here for the second time. And importantly, the format has changed.

There are no Starting Strokes anymore. The winner of the Tour Championship simply wins the FedExCup.

Four rounds. Lowest score. Champion.

After Thursday? Hovland is right in the middle of it.

This Hasn't Been Vintage Hovland All Year

That's what makes this opening round especially interesting. Hovland hasn't had the consistency we've seen from him in his best seasons.

He entered East Lake with only three top-10 finishes in 2026 and ranked 86th on Tour in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee.

That's a massive drop from 2023, when he ranked eighth in that category.  There have still been flashes.

Most notably, Hovland won the Travelers Championship earlier this summer.

But he hasn't consistently looked like the player who tore through the FedExCup Playoffs three years ago. Maybe East Lake brings something out of him.

Still Chasing Min Woo Lee

Of course, Hovland isn't leading. Min Woo Lee was even better Thursday.

Lee fired an 8-under 62, tying the lowest round of his PGA Tour career and giving himself a two-shot advantage.

Hovland sits at 6-under alongside Morikawa and Gotterup, with Scottie Scheffler only another shot behind at 5-under.

So there is a LONG way to go. But if you're an Oklahoma State fan watching one of the greatest golfers in program history?

Thursday was about as encouraging as it gets.

Final Thoughts

Hovland has already done this once. In 2023, he arrived at East Lake playing some of the best golf in the world and left as the FedExCup champion.

Three years later, he's trying to do it again. And after one round? He's two shots back after making more than 141 feet of putts.

Hovland hasn't consistently been vintage Hovland this season. But maybe he doesn't need to find it for an entire season anymore.

He just needs it for three more days. And if the putter stays anywhere near this hot? Viktor Hovland might be leaving East Lake with another trophy.
