If you’re from Central or Southern Virginia and a fan of high school football, you know the name Vic Hall well. A legendary high school quarterback at Gretna High School, Hall would go on to the University of Virginia, where he’d play cornerback and some quarterback, before going undrafted in the 2010 NFL draft.
Hall would spend some time on the offseason rosters of the Chicago Bears and New York Jets before being waived before the 2010 season. From there, Hall would sign with the Arena Football League, where he’d play cornerback, recording 15 interceptions and being named AFL Defensive Player of the Year before eventually turning to coaching in 2014.
On Tuesday, Hall became the latest addition to James Franklin’s coaching staff. He will coach nickels for the Hokies in 2026.
Hall began his coaching career at National College Prep for four years. In 2018, he joined Western Illinois as a graduate assistant/cornerbacks. In 2019, he joined Howard University, coaching cornerbacks for one season and safeties for another. In 2021, he took a position at Ball State, where he served as cornerbacks coach/co-recruiting coordinator for two seasons. In 2023, Hall was the passing game coordinator/defensive backs coach.
Hall took a position at Penn State in 2024, serving as a defensive analyst for Franklin. In 2025, he served as Rutgers’ safeties coach. He left the Scarlet Knights with one season remaining on his contract.
It’s a win for Franklin to pull Hall away from a Big Ten school and to his alma mater’s archrival. Hall joins Fontel Mines (wide receivers coach) as former UVA standouts on Virginia Tech’s coaching staff.
It’s important to note that Hall wasn’t named the cornerbacks or safeties coach. So, that’s two more positions we expect to hear about soon.
Hall has already updated his X profile with his new title at Virginia Tech.
