Virginia Tech football: Penn State OL Michael Troutman III transfers to Hokies

The Virginia Tech Hokies continue to rebuild their offensive line, with some help from a familiar place. Penn State offensive lineman Michael Troutman III became the last transfer to announce his commitment to the Hokies, following head coach James Franklin over from Happy Valley.

The 6-foot-2, 293-pound Troutman is from Wayne, New Jersey, and played high school football at DePaul Catholic. Troutman was originally a 3-star recruit in the 2025 recruiting class. Troutman did not play at Penn State last season, taking a redshirt year, and has four years of eligibility remaining.

We’ve seen the Hokies focus on adding size in their offensive line commitments. Troutman doesn’t quite possess the same size as some of VT’s other OL commitments, but he’s an interior offensive lineman and could be a center for the Hokies. Troutman is athletic and could compete for a spot in the two-deep in 2026.

Troutman is the 10th offensive line addition for the Hokies this offseason. Franklin signed seven in the 2026 recruiting class, and the Hokies have added three linemen via the NCAA transfer portal. Interestingly, four of those 10 offensive linemen are from New Jersey, including Oklahoma transfer Logan Howland.
