Virginia Tech football vs. Pittsburgh: Preview, betting odds, how to watch

The Virginia Tech Hokies face the Pittsburgh Panthers on Friday night under the lights at Lane Stadium. The college football world will be watching Blacksburg, as it should be, as the 4-0 Panthers arrive at Lane Stadium to face the 4-0 Hokies.
It’s James Franklin vs. Pat Narduzzi. When Franklin was at Penn State, he faced off against Narduzzi and Pitt four times, winning the past three meetings. That rivalry between the two head coaches has now become a conference rivalry.
There’s also a big-time quarterback matchup: Pitt’s Mason Heintschel vs. Virginia Tech’s Ethan Grunkemeyer. This game has so many storylines, but it could be decided here. Both quarterbacks have done a great job of limiting mistakes through four games. Whoever makes the first mistake on Friday night could cost his team the game.
We previewed Pittsburgh by the numbers. Now, it’s time for our full preview ahead of Saturday’s ACC opener for both teams.
3 Panthers to watch
- QB Mason Heintschel: Heintschel is off to an unbelieveable start to the season. In four games, he has 13 touchdown passes. What’s remarkable about that is six came in one game and seven came in another. In the other two games, which were against FBS teams, Heintschel did not throw a touchdown pass. Much like Pitt is the strongest test for the Hokies thus far, the same can be said for the Panthers facing Virginia Tech.
- WR Censere Lee: The Panthers have multiple talented receivers, but Lee, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound senior, is tied for the team lead in receptions and his four touchdowns lead the team. Maryland had several quality wideouts, but Pittsburgh’s crew is deeper. Lee is the name to know.
- DT Nick James: Pitt has a great history of elite defensive tackle play. Of course, Aaron Donald comes to mind first, but there have been others, too. While Nick James isn’t going to remind anyone of Donald, the 6-foot-2, 295-pound senior is a big reason why Pitt is so dominant against the run. The Panthers currently rank fourth nationally in run defense. James is a big reason for that. He’s also been excellent at pressuring opposing quarterbacks, too.
3 Hokies to watch
- QB Ethan Grunkemeyer: Can Grunkemeyer outduel Heintschel? This should be a fun battle. Grunkemeyer got off to a slow start last week at Boston College. It wasn’t his fault. The Hokies were playing in miserable conditions and Tech’s passing game struggled. However, in the fourth quarter when Virginia Tech needed him the most, Grunkemeyer led a surgical 10-play, 80-yard drive in under two minutes to tie the game. Even in sloppy conditions, Grunkemeyer took care of the football again. He’ll be tested against the Panthers.
- RB Jeffrey Overton Jr: The redshirt freshman looks like one of the ACC’s best players. He’s shared the backfield with Marcellous Hawkins throughout the first four games. Both have enjoyed great success. Hawkins wasn’t playing well last week, not all of it was his fault, so in the second half, Franklin went Overton. He had several solid runs that made you think the big one was coming. It did, to the tune of 76 yards and the game-winner. Pittsburgh will be a formidable foe for the Hokies, as it allows under 55 rushing yards per game.
- EDGE Cortez Harris: The Hokies must get pressure on Heintschel. This will be the best offensive line VT has faced this season. It’s a stout group. The Hokies must win one-on-one matchups. Aycen Stevens, Cortez Harris and Mylachi Williams have been outstanding all season. If one, or all three, can make Heintschel a little antsy in the pocket, good things could follow.
3 keys to a Virginia Tech victory
- Avoid the big mistake: The Hokies made a mistake last week when Hawkins fumbled. Fortunately, it didn’t cost them. What helped them was avoiding mistakes on offense, which was tough in the weather. Grunkemeyer must continue to play point guard, avoid sacks and get the ball into his playmaker’s hands. If the Hokies play turnover-free football again, they’ll win this game.
- Find a way to run: The Panthers are excellent against the run. But they also haven’t faced a team like the Hokies with running backs like Overton and Hawkins. Overton doesn’t to have a 209-yard game again, but if the Hokies can run the ball, that’s good news for this game and moving forward. VT’s offensive line still has some questions with Justin Terry out.
- Avoid the big play: The Hokies allowed some big plays in the wins over ODU and Maryland. Ultimately, those plays didn’t hurt them. If they allow big plays to the Panthers, it will be a different story. Brent Pry’s defense must make Heintschel earn every year, even if it’s longer drives.
