What a week for the Virginia Tech Hokies. One week after the 2026 spring game, head coach James Franklin was busy building the 2027 recruiting class, adding running back Kelvin Morrison on Thursday, tight end Braxton Salster on Friday and on Saturday, Franklin received a pledge from Anthony “AJ” Roberts of Rolesville, North Carolina.

Roberts, a 6-foot-1.5-inch, 193-pound wide receiver, was in Blacksburg for the spring game last weekend, which sealed the deal for the Hokies. Franklin has been recruiting Roberts since his time at Penn State. Roberts picked the Hokies over a group of finalists that included Duke, Florida State, Wake Forest, and NC State.

Roberts has a lean frame, good speed, and a background in basketball, which helps him in contested catch situations. He averaged 15 points per game in basketball this past season and caught 9 touchdowns in football. He’s the seventh commitment to Virginia Tech in the 2027 recruiting class, including the sixth this month.

All seven of VT’s 2027 commitments have come since March 19, with the first four coming along the defensive line.

Roberts is a high three-star prospect and is the No. 20 player in the state of North Carolina, per 247Sports.

Franklin and the Hokies are continuing to ride the momentum since his November hiring and strong finish in the 2026 recruiting class.
