Saturday at 3:30 the 2nd half of the 2026 season starts on a cool mid-October afternoon in Blacksburg. The trees are changing in the mountains of SW Virginia, are the Hokies’ fortunes going to change with them?
It’s Homecoming for the Hokies
Virginia Tech is celebrating homecoming weekend. The fall colors are beginning to show up in the surrounding mountains and tree lines. The game is sold out, and the theme for the crowd is Maroon Effect.
B.A. Receives a Major Award
Bruce Ariens has been awarded the prestigious Paul “Bear” Bryant Heart of a Champion Award to honor his impact on sports. B.A. probably holds more Super Bowl rings in his cabinet than any single Hokie. If you remember the phrase “No Risk-it, no Biscuit”, you are picturing Bruce Ariens in your head. Ariens is all Hokie (well, VPI Fighting Gobbler, actually) and has been an occasional advisor to the administration about the football program. He’s always popular when he comes home to visit, and
Q. Brown Gets Noticed
Que’Sean Brown is a superior receiver. Hokie Nation has been repeatedly thrilled with his clutch receiving and exciting snap to snap field play, but he’s also becoming one of the best punt returners in the ACC. His explosive moves, and big gains have denied opponents the opportunity to flip the field. He gets nominated for the Jet Award since his numbers in the ACC are pushing into the rest of D1 NCAA competition.
Luke Reynolds gets Noticed for the Biletnikoff Award
Most everyone knew that Reynolds was going to be good, but few people predicted how important and special a player that he could be for the Hokies. This team, in the past, has had some really special Tight Ends, but few have risen above Mackie Award watch lists. The Biletnikoff Award is for all receivers, and that almost always means Wide Receivers, not TEs.
Predictions Time
The general impression of the game is not trivial. This might be a real knock down drag out fight. The battle of the ACC Techs has been a major contest since the Hokies joined the ACC. Some years, they are up, other years the Hokies are favored. This season, the odds makers are giving Virginia Tech a 10-point spread advantage over the Yellow Jackets. The Wreck’s win over hard charging Duke last weekend means that maybe that impression from the betting houses is a bit off. The Over/Under is 56.5 as listed by Yahoo at this writing. That’s an interesting number, because it assumes a rather traditional game score. The wise guys think that this is going to be a balanced game of mostly back and forth with defense and offense playing good games.
This game has the potential to be a whole lot tougher and much closer than the 10 points predicted. The Offensive Line is still struggling to run block. Brody Meadows is expected back to help but it’s still shuffled around, and two starters are still either out or questionable. The secondary still has not connected the dots and the team play discipline is bumping along the trouble zone.
Bryan Manning
It’s past time for the Hokies to get back on the winning side of things. Two weeks ago it was turnovers, last week, the defense couldn’t stop Cal’s backups. I think we see a more inspired effort on Saturday. Ethan Grunkemeyer has another big day and Jeff Overton goes over 100 yards again. Hokies win comfortably.
Hokies 34, Georgia Tech 17
John Schneider
This is a major turning point game for this season. Forget the ACC fake Championship. Forget any dreams of playoffs. At this point, the Hokies are faced with the hinge pin. Does this team struggle to get to .500 and a low tier booger bowl or perhaps even shut down altogether? Does it rally up staunch the bleeding, and finally break into a winning season posture? A win against Georgia Tech would go a long way to answering those questions.
Georgia Tech hasn’t been impressive on offense. Their defense woke up last weekend to tighten down hard on a high-flying Duke team. They barely won that one, but football doesn’t count the spread it only recognizes the score at the end.
Something tells me that the coaching staff, and James Franklin in particular, aren’t going to settle for a continuation of the issues that have dogged this team for the first 6 games. I think the Hokies take this one in a real knock-down-drag-out brawl. The spread might be a bit optimistic.
31-24 Hokies
Just a Reminder that Homecoming Means Special Memories
The image of Lane Stadium back “in the day” is still stunning.
Kickoff is at 3:30. We’ll be on the field.
GO HOKIES!!!
