Virginia Tech vs Maryland Prediction, Pick, College Football Odds for Saturday, Sept. 19

The Virginia Tech Hokies take on the Maryland Terrapins in College Park, MD. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1.

Virginia Tech is favored by -3 points on the spread with a moneyline of -150. The total is set at 53.5 points.

Here’s my Virginia Tech vs. Maryland prediction and college football pick for Saturday, September 19, 2026.

Virginia Tech vs Maryland Odds

So far, so good for the James Franklin era in Blacksburg. The Hokies are 2-0 with a pair of dominating wins. They have outscored their opponents 117-24 without breaking a sweat, but now face their first real test on the road against a Big 10 opponent.

Quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer followed Franklin from Penn State and has been nearly flawless in his first two starts for Virginia Tech. Grunkemeyer has thrown for 551 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions. He doesn’t even have a turnover-worthy play.

Grunkemeyer’s favorite target has been his former Nittany Lion teammate Luke Reynolds. The former five-star tight end leads the team with 13 catches and 158 yards and has caught three of Grunk’s four touchdown passes.

Penn State became Tight End U under Franklin, and five different tight ends have already caught a pass for Virginia Tech.

The running back room for the Hokies has a dynamic one-two punch of Marcellous Hawkins and Jeffrey Overton. Both holdovers from last season, they are off to a great start, combining for six touchdowns in two games. Hawkins leads the ACC with four touchdowns.

The one area to monitor on this Virginia Tech offense is the status of starting center Kyle Altuner, who missed last week with an injury.

Not enough was made this offseason about the move to retain fired head coach Brent Pry on staff as the defensive coordinator. Not only does it take a lot of class from Pry to swallow his pride and accept the demotion, but it also shows the trust Franklin has in his former defensive coordinator.

Pry served as the defensive coordinator for Franklin for three seasons at Vanderbilt and eight years at Penn State, where they consistently had a top-ranked defense.

Obviously, it’s an incredibly small sample size against weaker competition, but through the first two weeks, Virginia Tech ranks 10th in the country, allowing just 196.5 yards per game.

Old Dominion had 123 yards rushing last week, but 76 of them came on one play, with a long quarterback run from Quinn Henicle.

The defensive line has looked absolutely dominant through two games. The Hokies lead the nation with 12 sacks and a ridiculous 32 tackles for loss. They have eight more TFLs than any other team.

Another Penn State transfer, defensive end Mylachi Williams, has been dominant for this defense. He has been a monster off the edge, already racking up 6.0 tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles. We have seen plenty of dominant edge rushers lead Pry’s defenses in the past.

Joining Williams up front have been another Penn State transfer, Cortez Harris and holdovers Kaleb Spencer and Kemari Copeland, who have also looked great on this defensive line. This looks like one of the best defensive fronts in the ACC.

It might be a do-or-die season in College Park for Mike Locksley. Now in his eighth season with the Terrapins, Locksley has posted two straight losing seasons and has failed to post a winning season in conference play or eclipse the eight-win mark.

If Maryland is going to achieve its goals this season, quarterback Malik Washington is going to need to carry them there. Now in his second season, the most talented quarterback Locksley has had needs to improve on an inconsistent freshman year.

Washington showed flashes of his talent but completed just 57.5% of his passes for 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Two games in, Washington has a 73.6% completion percentage with three touchdowns and no picks. He has yet to really use his legs against weaker competition, but could be unleashed here.

The hope for Maryland is that a retooled wide receiver room will help Washington take a big step forward. The Terrapins receivers led the country with 39 dropped passes last season, doing Washington zero favors.

Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding (Old Dominion) and Chris Durr (Wyoming) were brought in from the transfer portal, and they are already Maryland’s two leading receivers.

Washington needs to be the best player on this team, but he also needs some help from his receivers and at least a somewhat competent running game.

Defensively, Maryland is projected to have one of their most talented groups in recent memory. They allowed just 14 points in the first two games, their fewest through two games since 2001. The Terrapins rank fourth in the country, allowing just 154 yards per game.

This unit returns eight starters on defense. The linebackers all return and are nasty, with Carlton Smith, Trey Reddick and Daniel Wingate all back in the middle of this defense.

Sidney Stewart and Zahir Mathis are back on the edge, wreaking havoc, and five-star edge rusher Zion Elee is the highest-rated high school commit in Maryland history and has already made a difference with a big strip sack last week.

Say whatever you want about James Franklin and how his team’s perform against top five opponents, one thing that is undeniable is that Franklin owns Maryland and Mike Locksley.

Franklin was a wide receivers coach at Maryland from 2000-2004, coaching alongside Locksley, who was the running backs coach at the time. Franklin returned to College Park again in 2008 as the offensive coordinator, assistant head coach, and head coach-in-waiting to succeed Ralph Friedgen.

After a change in athletic leadership, that plan changed, and Franklin left for Vanderbilt. He clearly still holds a grudge after all these years, and Franklin and Locksley have traded jabs in the media and frosty handshakes over the years.

Since becoming a head coach, Franklin has gone 9-2 against Maryland and has shown no hesitation in running up the score. His teams are 8-3 against the spread versus Maryland. He has outscored the Terps by an average margin of 25.9 points.

If you take out the 2020 Pandemic season, Franklin has won eight straight meetings with the Terrapins. He especially loved making a statement in College Park. In recent years, Franklin has returned to Maryland to hang 31, 66, 59, 31, and 51 points on the Terps.

On the field this season, both defenses have looked dominant through two games, but I have more faith in this Virginia Tech defensive front to continue to cause disruption and havoc all season.

Williams and Harris are lethal on the edges for this Hokies defense. I still do not trust Maryland to establish a reliable run game, which forces them to rely too much on Washington.

This will allow the Hokies’ front to pin their ears back, get after the quarterback and keep him under pressure. Washington might have more upside than Grunkemeyer, but the Virginia Tech quarterback has proven to be a steadying force dating back to last season at Penn State.

The Hokies have better weapons on offense with Luke Reynolds and Que’Sean Brown catching passes, and Hawkins and Overton in the run game.

Give me Franklin and the Hokies to continue to dominate Locksley and the Terps.
