Washington football adds San Jose State to 2033 schedule

Washington has begun to build its football schedule seven years into the future.

San Jose State announced Wednesday that they will travel to Montlake to take on the Huskies on September 17, 2033, which should mark Week 3 of that season. It will mark the 11th all-time meeting between the two teams and first since 2006, when Isaiah Stanback threw for 168 yards and a touchdown while adding 102 yards and another score on the ground in a 35-29 win. Washington leads the all-time series 10-0.

"We are excited to add the University of Washington from the Big Ten to our future non-conference schedule," said San Jose State athletic director Jeff Konya in a press release. "Competing against premier programs in iconic venues like Husky Stadium provides a terrific test for our student-athletes and an exciting matchup for our alumni and fans."

Washington is expected to also have five home games and four road games in Big Ten play that season, although opponents have not yet been announced by the conference. The Huskies will be in their fourth season as a full-share member of the Big Ten by the time the game rolls around, as Washington and Oregon are due to receive a full share of the conference's media rights revenue beginning in the 2030-31 season. Washington received $46.7 million from the conference in 2024-25, compared to an average of $79.9 million to schools that received a full share, so the change will give the Huskies nearly double the amount of revenue and potentially change the tenor of the program by the time San Jose State comes to Seattle.

San Jose State is the first opponent on any Washington schedule beyond 2030. The Huskies will host Fresno State and Portland State and travel to Washington State for the Apple Cup in non-conference play in 2027 and host Eastern Washington, UNLV, and Washington State in 2028. The Apple Cup continuation agreement currently expires after the 2028 season, but Washington seems to be leaving space on the non-conference schedule if it continues. They travel to Tennessee and host Boise State in 2029 and have home games against Tennessee and Hawaii planned in 2030.

Head coach Jedd Fisch's contract is due to expire following the 2030 season. He would be entering his tenth season as coach of the Huskies in 2033, which would put him among the longest-tenured coaches in the sport (only ten coaches in FBS this season have been at their school for more than 10 years). The class of 2029, currently high school sophomores, would be in their fifth and final seasons of eligibility, and current sixth graders would be entering their freshman seasons as the class of 2033.

Washington begins Big Ten play with Minnesota coming to Montlake this Saturday at 8:00 p.m. PT.
