Washington football eyeing promising local athlete in 2027 class

With three-star cornerback Evan Mack off the board, Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies coaching staff are looking for one more big, long defensive back to add to their 2027 recruiting class, and they happen to have a prototypical prospect in their backyard in three-star athlete J’Isaiah Mitchell.
The 6-foot-5, 180-pound product of in-state Puyallup High School, who received an offer from secondary coach John Richardson in late June, also holds an offer from the Huskies at wide receiver; however, there doesn’t appear to be a fit on Montlake at the position, since wide receivers coach Kevin Cummings already holds four pledges at the position.
Mitchell, who is ranked as the nation’s No. 845 overall prospect and No. 62 athlete by the 247Sports Composite, wound up making a commitment to Boise State to play receiver, but the Huskies could make a late charge ahead of signing day in an attempt to keep him in Washington.

With his background at wide receiver and understanding of the position, Mitchell has an intriguing ceiling on defense. His fluidity and athleticism on offense show up on the defensive side with his ability to mirror receivers in coverage, flipping his hips with ease, while his size and natural strength also bring plenty of physicality when tackling.
He also possesses the traits that Richardson covets the most: size and length. Like 2026 NFL draft picks Tacario Davis and Ephesians Prysock, Mitchell is suffocating on the outside in press coverage, with the length and strength to prevent receivers from even getting off the line at times, which has become Washington’s secondary coach’s favorite technique to teach.
The Huskies currently hold one pledge at cornerback from three-star Maurice Williams, but Fisch’s coaching staff has also received several crystal balls to secure the services of four-star Censere Gaylord. With UW’s emphasis on recruiting in-state
