Washington football fans knew there was a chance Elijah Brown would start at quarterback this season after Demond Williams Jr.’s attempted defection, and with the latter now sidelined, the Stanford transfer will officially get his opportunity. Brown took first-team reps at practice all week and will get the nod for Friday night’s road game versus Purdue, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Williams is nursing a rib injury he suffered in last Saturday’s 41-24 loss to Iowa, but there is a chance he will be active as a reserve. The Huskies’ season has already descended into bitter disappointment following three-straight losses to Big Ten competition — Minnesota, USC and Iowa — but they still must build good offensive habits.

Brown completed 28-of-39 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns after replacing Williams against the Hawkeyes. The 6-foot-2 native of Huntington Beach, California will try to follow up that productive showing versus the scrappy yet defensively weak Purdue Boilermakers.

Given Williams’ inconsistencies this season, one has to wonder if a victorious showing in West Lafayette, Indiana would secure Brown the starting job moving forward. This fan base desperately wants to latch onto something positive at the moment, and Jedd Fisch needs good results.

A pivotal year three of his Washington football head coaching tenure is on shaky ground. Conversely, the vibes are quite high in Purdue coming off back-to-back Big Ten wins.

The Huskies have much to prove, but a new QB with loads of motivation could be the defibrillator this program requires.
